Through his work with the Senate Rackets Committee, Bobby saw how media coverage could affect a dependent’s right to a fair trial, a problem that is even greater today. At this 1962 press conference, he defends everyone’s right to a fair trial, even organized crime members, yet he understands the public’s need to know. Makes you wonder what he would think of the “fake news” phenomenon today.
Bobby was always willing to meet with the press because he believed that in order to everyone to get a fair trial, especially in the court of public opinion, that we had to be transparent with and respect the members of our press. Here is some rare local television news footage of RFK when he was senator for New York at a Sigma Delta Chi Dinner (now known as the Society of Professional Journalists) at the Ramada Inn in Tualatin, Oregon on April 17, 1968. The clip shows his arrival and the conclusion of his speech.
